Remembrance

By Angela Dunsby

As I was walking beneath a bright sky,

The air so warm, the grass so high,

The breeze around me felt like a sigh

And I smiled as I thought of you.

As I lay broken beneath a bruised sky,

Looking up as the bullets, began to fly,

The bodies around me made me cry

And I wept as I longed for you.

As I was dancing and cheering loud,

Amidst a smiling, jubilant crowd,

The echoes of laughter rang all around

And I sang with a joyous voice.

As I was crawling and shouting aloud,

Amidst a screaming and wailing crowd,

Keeping my head protectively bowed,

I cried out with an unheard voice.

As I went strolling with my love,

His hand in mine, fit like a glove,

The sun beat down from high above

As I looked to the future ahead.

As I thought longingly of my love,

Her picture tucked inside my glove,

The sun bled through the smoke above

And I wept for my life far way.

As I knelt down in silent prayer,

I felt the lord beside me there,

I thanked him for his love and care

As I slipped into blissful sleep.

As men fell down, I said a prayer

And felt the lord beside me there,

I begged him for his help and care,

As they slipped into endless sleep.

I pinned my poppy upon my breast,

And felt the gratitude in my chest,

I’ll always remember those men at rest,

Who died that I could live.

I pinned my medals upon my chest,

And felt the grief within my breast,

As I remembered those friends at rest

Who gave all that they had to give.
