The Works of John Moore – The 1930s
Between 1930 and 1939 John Moore had seventeen books published. In 1931 he turned his back on what should have proved a secure future as an auctioneer, opting for the insecure existence of a writer. During these early years he gradually developed his successful writing style, although, in common with most writers, he did take one or two wrong turns along the way.
Tramping Through Wales
In the preface to Tramping Through Wales, published in 1931, John Moore wrote:
‘This is in no sense a guide-book, because I possess none of the qualities that make a reliable guide. Such a person should be sober, honest, industrious, responsible, erudite, and above all respectable….
Reader, not one of these virtues is mine. I have no regard for my duty to my neighbour, and I travel to please myself. I am not in the least conscientious, and I would not walk a mile to inspect an old castle or an interesting church unless some whim of my own dragged me there. Moreover, I hate Looking At Views with all my heart and soul.’

Don’t judge John’s stated principles too harshly by this preface, though; remember that he wrote it as a callow youth of 24. Like most of us, his values altered with age.
