Gloucestershire’s prisons developed from medieval public punishments and fines into a complex nineteenth-century system of county, city, penitentiary, and correctional institutions. This presentation traces the changing ideas about crime, confinement, prisoner welfare, discipline, and reform through buildings, regulations, registers, and individual cases. It looks at Tudor punishments for vagrancy and crime which led to the creation of Houses of Correction or Bridewells and imprisonment. It also examines debtors’ gaols where prisoners were commonly held together in large cells where disease, hunger, abuse, and prolonged confinement were widespread and the county gaols, where later reforms introduced regular controlled diets, work, health measures, religious education, daily schedules, and treadmill labour (where prisoners were required to walk for six or more hours daily).
