Tewkesbury in the English Civil War (1642-1651)
A talk by Simon Jones, Colonel of Lord Thomas Grey’s Sealed Knot Regiment of foot
At the beginning of the war in 1642, many towns wanted to remain neutral. Tewkesbury, despite the nearby example of pro-Parliament Gloucester, seemed, as one unhappy Parliamentarian remarked, to desire ‘an everlasting neutrality’. Despite trying to stay out of the war, the town exchanged hands eight times between the Royalists and Parliamentarians, which shows its strategic importance.
Visit the beautiful 15th century timber-framed Old Baptist Chapel to meet Simon Jones, Colonel of Lord Thomas Grey’s Sealed Knot Regiment of foot, who will be talking about the part Tewkesbury, played during this bloody conflict, from the west country campaigns of 1643/44 to the final decisive battle of Worcester in 1651.
At the end of the talk there will be an opportunity to handle a small range of the types of equipment which would have been used by the soldiers that were in the town during the Civil War period.
Lord Thomas Grey’s is a parliamentarian regiment. During the Civil War parliament stood up for the rights of the common man against a King who would hold absolute power over them all.
