‘John Nevil Maskelyne – Gloucestershire’s Master of Magic and Mystery’
Born in Cheltenham in 1839, Maskelyne is one of England’s most famous magicians and is still honoured to this day by the Magic Circle, who present an annual ‘Maskelyne Award’. An inventor, who created the penny lock for the toilet, Maskelyne still holds the record for the longest continuous running magic show in British history – 31 years at Egyptian Hall in London – and is commemorated on two plaques in Cheltenham.
The talk also includes one or two magic tricks!

When not researching the past, Andy has worked as a head teacher, actor and storyteller and has recently retired as a bookseller with Waterstones. He has always had a passion for history and hopes his talks will inspire others to delve deeper into the subjects about which he speaks.
