The John Moore Museum is nestled in a row of late-Medieval timber-framed buildings located in the precincts of Tewkesbury Abbey.
The museum consists of three heritage properties and gardens: the main John Moore Museum building, the Merchant’s House and the Old Baptist Chapel.
The John Moore Museum is dedicated to the memory of Tewkesbury writer and naturalist, John Moore, and contains a large natural history collection. Moore, who died in 1967, was an early advocate of conservation, both natural and built.
The Merchant’s House located three doors away has been beautifully restored to look as it would have done in 1580 when a merchant and his family were living and working in the building. The house contains a number of replica Tudor artefacts as well as audio guides and interpretation panels.
Between the two buildings is the Secret Garden, beautifully secluded and overlooked by the Abbey.
The Old Baptist Chapel started life as a medieval house, the building later became an early meeting house for a Nonconformist group, the Baptists, before returning to domestic use when it was converted into two Victorian cottages. Recently renovated, the building interprets the history of the early Baptist movement in the town from persecution to toleration through audio tours, handling collections and touchscreen displays.
