Tolkien and the Cotswolds – the Shaping of Middle Earth

Gloucestershire and the surrounding area played a significant role in JRR Tolkien’s personal and literary life. His wife, Edith, was born in Gloucester and their first child was born in a nursing home in Cheltenham. The Gloucestershire landscape through which he drove to visit his brother Hilary in Evesham, was to provide much of the inspiration for Middle Earth. During the talk, we also learn of Tolkien’s involvement in the discovery of a ring with supposed magical powers at Lydney Park in the Forest of Dean!

Speaker

Andy Meller

When not researching the past, Andy has worked as a head teacher, actor and storyteller and has just retired as a bookseller with Waterstones. He has always had a passion for history and hopes his talks will inspire others to delve deeper into the subjects about which he speaks.
