The Merchant's House Interpretation Project
We have now reached the mid-point in our exciting Heritage Lottery Fund project and have already begun to breath new life into The Merchant's House.
From April visitors to the house will notice a number of inspiring new features and resources which will help to explain the life and times of this former Merchant's household.
Oral History Archive
What is it really like to live in a row of buildings with so much history? This archive will allow a fascinating insight into the experiences and memories of former and current residents of The Abbey Cottages. To accompany these recordings, a resource pack containing relevant source materials will be available to download from September.
New Characters
In the spring, four new characters will join the house, each with their own character box filled with replica artefacts and educational resources. These characters each have their own stories to tell and will help to illustrate the day to day lifestyles of Tudor people.
New Furniture
Some of our newest furnishings so far have included a trestle table, four benches and four 16th century style wooden chests, all of which have been custom made and handcrafted by skilled local craftsmen. By April, these will be accompanied by new bed hangings and wall hangings to add an element of 16th century colour and style.
Living History Events
During the first two weeks of March we will be hosting our annual Living History Workshops. From 28th February until 11th March, professional costumed interpreters will transform this 15th century building into a living, breathing Tudor household. Pupils will join a Tudor merchant and his wife as they go about their day to day business and explore topics such as food and cookery, health and hygiene, trade and commerce, and clothing.
There are still a few remaining sessions available. To make a booking, please contact us: 01684 297174.
New Education Sessions
To help you to make the most of these exciting new resources, we are developing a number of new workshops tailored to the requirements of the National Curriculum. Further information about these new sessions will be available soon.
